What the visit looks like

The estimator arrives at the agreed time, walks the area with the owner, measures it, probes the existing base or the soil, checks the slope and where rainwater goes, looks at truck and pump access, and photographs any existing concrete. Finish samples come along for decorative work. Questions about thickness, reinforcement, joints and timing are answered on the spot. The visit takes thirty to sixty minutes.

What the written sheet lists

In the price

Removal of existing concrete where there is any, excavation and hauling, the compacted stone base and its depth, reinforcement by type, concrete by thickness and mix, the finish, control joints, curing, clean-up, utility locates, and any permit and inspection fee as its own line.

Not in the price

Sealing, which is quoted separately for about a month after the pour. Changes to scope after the forms are set. Ground conditions the probe did not reveal, which are explained in writing before any extra work is approved. Landscaping repair beyond the work area.

Timing

The figure is valid for thirty days from the date on the sheet. No deposit is due until the estimate is approved; once it is, the job is scheduled for the next suitable weather window and the deposit stated on the sheet is taken then.

Comparing

The sheet is itemized so it can be compared line by line with any other quote. A second opinion on a driveway, a patio or a wall is reasonable; the question to ask every bidder is what goes under the slab and how deep.

Hazards

A step that has tilted, a walk with a lip, or a slab with a visible void under it is a tripping or collapse risk. Mention it when calling and the callback moves to the front of the line; keep people and vehicles off it in the meantime.
